A Rare Stones Inlaid Gilt Bronze Double Gourd Wall Vase
The flat backed double gourd body partitioned by celestial billowing ribbon-tied handles of stylized blossoms, flanking sides of carved turquoise fruiting branches within conforming rope twist trim, amidst a ground of engraved good luck symbols centering two reticulated white jade circular plaques with auspicious symbols and character letters enclosed by a ring of lapis beading, beneath a ruyi banded collar and stylized fretwork rim, on a similarly decorated flaring food with fretwork incised trim, raised on a shaped rectangular carved hardwood shelf.

A Similar Pair of Buddhist Lions from the Collection of Winston Guest Sold in Parke-Bernet Galleries December 2, 1967, Lot #41. A closely related example of the Female Lion is in The Philadelphia Museum of Art, two similar pairs of lion figures included in Jan Wirgin, K'ang-Hsi Porcelain, selected objects from Swedish collections, Stockholm, 1974, pls 46-7 and color plate 1, one of them, collected by Queen Hedvig Eleonora (1636-1715), also finely painted. Such level of brushwork can also be found on a pair sold at Christie's New York, 2nd June 1994, lot 375. See also a pair of lions from the Leonard Gow collection, included in the International Exhibition of Chinese Art, Royal Academy of Arts, London 1935-1936, cat. no. 1656.
